Summary

The epic that began with the HUGO and NEBULA Award-winning classic DUNE -- now a major motion picture from the director of Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival -- continues 。。。

The sand-blasted world of Arrakis has become green, watered and fertile。 Old Paul Atreides, who led the desert Fremen to political and religious domination of the galaxy, is gone。

But for the children of Dune, the very blossoming of their land contains the seeds of its own destruction。 The altered climate is destroying the giant sandworms, and this in turn is disastrous for the planet's economy。

Leto and Ghanima, Paul Atreides's twin children and his heirs, can see possible solutions - but fanatics begin to challenge the rule of the all-powerful Atreides empire, and more than economic disaster threatens 。。。

DNF'd at 6%。 I just didn't care? Wasn't interested。。 honestly bored。 It felt like a ton of rambling。 I liked book 1 and book 2 was decent enough。 I think maybe my interest just stopped there。 Won't be continuing the series。 Also not leaving a rating since I DNF'd it so early。 DNF'd at 6%。 I just didn't care? I feel like I have given this series a fighting chance… but it’s just bad。

Frank Herbert does it again。 At first I was worried I wasn't going to enjoy this one as much, but as the story went on I got super into it and the whole Dune universe once again。 I think I enjoyed this more than Dune Messiah? The general consensus is that the series begins to lag almost immediately after Dune - and I bought into that after Messiah just missed a couple of notes here and there。 And this starts in much the same way。 The world building feels bloated, the philosophical meanderings seem tangential。 But it all matters - the plotting is so precise, the narrative pillars and conflicts so well developed that you easily forget being cast into heavy exposition。 It ends up weaving back together seamlessly。 I don' The general consensus is that the series begins to lag almost immediately after Dune - and I bought into that after Messiah just missed a couple of notes here and there。 And this starts in much the same way。 The world building feels bloated, the philosophical meanderings seem tangential。 But it all matters - the plotting is so precise, the narrative pillars and conflicts so well developed that you easily forget being cast into heavy exposition。 It ends up weaving back together seamlessly。 I don't know if it's as good as the first - which had the benefit of clarity。 But it's a hell of a book。 。。。more

I think I need a break from this series after this book。I truly don't know how I feel about this one。 I just got the sense of repeatability。 Nothing added much to the story。 But I think that was on purpose。 They are building a new government in a different world。 It involves politics and religion as well。 And it's a big mess。 And in every government there is always corruption。 Nothing escapes from it。From the first book the story felt a little abstract to me, so I've struggled to keep up with it I think I need a break from this series after this book。I truly don't know how I feel about this one。 I just got the sense of repeatability。 Nothing added much to the story。 But I think that was on purpose。 They are building a new government in a different world。 It involves politics and religion as well。 And it's a big mess。 And in every government there is always corruption。 Nothing escapes from it。From the first book the story felt a little abstract to me, so I've struggled to keep up with it。 But all in all, it was a good story。 。。。more

Good enough and certainly better than Book 2 of the series。 Here is where I will take my leave of the Dune universe, however。The greatest mysteries have been revealed, the universe is opening up, and the secrets within secrets are becoming a bit like a TV series run a few seasons too long。

I really loved this book。 The first Dune book really hooked me to the world of Arrakis, the Fremen, and the power struggle over Melange。 Dune Messiah, while I didn't like as much as the first, was an interesting departure from its prequel and bridged the continuation of themes from Dune and Children of Dune。Character-wise, the twins take center stage。 Leto and Ghanima are the driving forces behind much of the plot, even though much of it feels behind-the-scenes。 Everyone else has their own machi I really loved this book。 The first Dune book really hooked me to the world of Arrakis, the Fremen, and the power struggle over Melange。 Dune Messiah, while I didn't like as much as the first, was an interesting departure from its prequel and bridged the continuation of themes from Dune and Children of Dune。Character-wise, the twins take center stage。 Leto and Ghanima are the driving forces behind much of the plot, even though much of it feels behind-the-scenes。 Everyone else has their own machinations, but they 9-year-olds with the memories of thousands of years of ancestors are the ones with the true plans。 They are like Alia in that they are wise beyond their years, but they seem to have a better grasp on the knowledge that is within them。 Still, though, they have brief instances of being children--Ghani moreso than her brother--which makes them almost feel tragic。 (view spoiler)[ Leto does become more of a tragic character towards the end when he must become the true "messiah" of Dune, overshadowing his father and becoming something that is no longer human。 And the twist of walking away from the "Golden Path" ended up being such a cool inversion。 (hide spoiler)]Speaking of Alia, I found her to be such a tragic character throughout the books。 In the first, she is nearly shunned because of her pre-born knowledge。 In Messiah, she is treated much the same way but comes to struggle more with herself and her responsibilities。 She is offered some comfort with Duncan, however。 (view spoiler)[But as we see in this book, she betrays Duncan due to vile influence from her grandfather, ultimately betraying herself in the end and dying。 As I write this, I think she became one of my favorite (if not my favorite) characters in the series。 When she came through in the end, pleading with her mother, who even feared her, it broke my heart。 I hope in some way she found peace in the end。 (hide spoiler)]I was happy to see the return of Jessica and Gurney。 I like Jessica but felt she was rather cold in this book。 I found her to be intriguing, however, as she continued her struggle with her alliances between her family and her duties。 I've never been a huge fan of Gurney, to be honest。 I've never really liked Gurney-esque characters all that much。 They remind me too much of the old John Wayne, Lawful Good people that I knew growing up that tried to instill their own values in me and try to make me see how I need to "take things like a man"。 However, I was glad to see him in this, still faithful to Jessica。 If I were in her position, I couldn't think of anyone better to have protecting me。Other returning characters like Duncan, Stilgar, and even Irulan ended up being some of my favorites。 All three were just good people trying to do the right thing。 In some cases, it helped and in some, it hurt。 (view spoiler)[ In Duncan's case, I appreciated how his story was just as tragic as his wife/lover Alia。 But his ultimate demise in killing Javid was a fitting end。 Again, I hope he found some measure of peace。 (hide spoiler)] It was nice to see Irulan have more to do and she did keep to her word in caring for the twins。 And Stilgar, who is tied with Alia at this point as my favorite, poor Stilgar。 Caught between his old school rules and a changing world。I didn't care for Farad'n。 Maybe it was because his mother was trying to kill children or maybe it was because he was because is was Corrino but I just didn't care about him。 I didn't want him to be emperor and I didn't care for his scenes with Jessica all that much。 To me, he just felt like Diet Paul: a reminder of what once was but not nearly as good。Finally, there's the Preacher。 What an intriguing character。 I loved his scenes, where he would just show up and give his sermons。 He was in danger from Alia, but he didn't care。 (view spoiler)[I believe in my review of Dune Messiah, I mentioned how I didn't think Paul was really dead and so I wasn't too surprised to find he didn't。 However, maybe of his ideals had, it seemed。 So much of him was gone due to being fed the spice so much that he truly was The Preacher and not Muad'dib。 In the end, however, he still served his purpose。 Paul needed to truly die so that the cult around Muad'dib could as well。 (hide spoiler)]Now that I've gotten most of the characters out of the way, let's move on to the story。 (FYI, this will get spoiler-y)。 It almost feels as epic as the original Dune: multiple characters spanning multiple allegiances as well as planets。 But what I really loved about this was that it wasn't just a re-hash。 It almost felt like this was going to be an inverse Dune, with Farad'n trying to seize back control of the planet and the Empire, but it wasn't that really。 However, it still felt like an inverse of Dune thematically。 This book is about the flaws in the Messiah stories and Paul's own flaws。 Yes, he became emperor and even a god to many, but by following the "Golden Path", he was ultimately going to bring the destruction of Dune and the universe as they knew it。 The Preacher sees this, to a point, in his criticisms in Alia and how she governs things, but he doesn't quite get it all right。 Only Leto in his turning away from the Golden Path, can save the planet and the spices。I think what I enjoyed about this was that it felt like the Star Wars Sequel series but done right。 The inversions that we saw were always seeded throughout the previous two books。 We don't get these weird heel-turns just for the sake of it。 For 1) we know that the Bene Gesserit breeding program is flawed and ultimately manipulative。 Paul became a messiah, but it was never going to be perfect。 2) Anyone who knows anything about the environment knows that with massive ecological change comes change for the animals。 Of course turning Arrakis from a desert planet to one that is lush with water and vegetation would ultimately kill off the worms and with it the source of Melange。 3) It also makes sense that the pre-born could be influenced by the memories of their ancestors, leading to Alia becoming an "Abomination"。I feel like I am rambling at this point, so I will just end it here。 Frank Herbert was a masterful storyteller and the way he weaves themes with character development and plot comes to a head in this book。 Children of Dune was a fitting way to end this trilogy。 I'm undecided if I will try to continue with the series as a whole, but if I didn't, then I think I can accept that this was a fitting end to this era of Arrakis。 。。。more

So ends my reading of Dune books for a while! Although Herbert has not failed to deliver a staple in science fiction, some plot points from this novel seemed to be rehashes from the first two novels。 However, the repeating plot patterns can be dissuading for some readers to continue on with the series。

It was amazing! The beginning is very gripping, it drags a bit in the middle, but that end really brought it all home。 These books may be separate but this is truly one long overarching story broken down into 6 books。 It’s all so meticulously thought out and it shows。 The Golden Path is coming together before my eyes!
